Unless governments cut greenhouse gas emissions decisively the world is headed toward a climate catastrophe, warned United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Many countries are moving in the wrong direction and he called upon all nations to declare “climate emergencies” and act before it’s too late.

Guterres was addressing the UN Climate Ambition Summit on Dec. 12 on the Paris Climate Agreement’s fifth anniversary. Scientists say greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced by 50% over the next decade to prevent global warming of 1.5 degrees Celsius and avert a climate catastrophe. …

Third in a series exploring challenges facing the democratic labor-people’s coalition that was instrumental in ousting Trump. Parts and appeared previously in People’s World.

Trump’s appeal to white racial identity and toxic masculinity was the most significant factor in mobilizing his 74 million voters. Trump and his minions deployed racism in a failed attempt to overturn the election by demanding the trashing of millions of African American votes, claiming they were fraudulent.

Trump is leaving behind massive wreckage, damage to democratic institutions, and deep and volatile racial and social divisions. But Trumpism, based on white supremacy, misogyny, xenophobia, homophobia, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, lies, conspiracy theories, and mass disinformation, the stuff of fascism, will continue as a potent movement. …

Second, in a three-part series exploring challenges facing the multi-racial labor-people’s democratic coalition that was instrumental in ousting Trump. appeared previously in People’s World.

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris assume office on Jan. 21, 2020, confronting the most significant overlapping set of crises since the Great Depression, beginning with the exploding Covid-19 pandemic, and economic, inequality, and ecological crises. Only large-scale solutions and government intervention can begin to solve these crises.

Consolidating the election victory and addressing these crises occur under complex, changed circumstances. The mass democratic people’s movement instrumental in ousting Trump has an ally in the Biden administration, setting the agenda. …

As a nation, we’ve arrived at what some call an “inflection” point. We face immense, overlapping, and intersecting economic, social, and inequality crises, as well as a climate emergency. The COVID-19 pandemic intensifies all of them. To address them and the ongoing threat to democracy, the broad and diverse coalition of forces and voting blocs that elected Joe Biden and Kamala Harris must remain united against fierce GOP resistance.

The 2020 elections mostly boiled down to a contest between two distinct visions for the future, or what Rev. …

Cities and towns erupted with dancing in the streets after news outlets declared Joe Biden and Kamala Harris winners on Nov. 7. Among the “heroes” who defended democracy and election integrity despite withering assault by Trump and his minions are the nation’s postal workers, whom revelers spontaneously hugged and high-fived during the celebrations.

Despite enormous challenges, postal workers “moved heaven and earth” to deliver 65 million mail-in ballots, double from 2016, ensuring voters could make their voices known during a deadly pandemic. …

A voter uprising is sweeping Texas, where more early ballots have already been cast than in the entire 2016 election. One person who should be very worried by this is incumbent GOP U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, in danger of being caught up in a voter tsunami that could carry the state for Joe Biden.

The three-term senator is locked in a tight race with Democratic challenger MJ Hegar, an Air Force pilot and military veteran seeking to be the first Democrat to win statewide in 30 years. …

Across the country, neither the resurgent COVID-19 pandemic nor GOP voter suppression is deterring millions of voters from casting their ballots. Early voter turnout is shattering records (as of this writing, 71 million, or over half of total turnout in 2016, have already voted), and at this pace, the U.S. will experience the highest percentage of eligible voter turnout since 1909.

But woo doggy, what is going on in Texas? Despite the nation’s worst voter suppression laws, a walloping 8 million Texans have already voted, including one million on the first day of in-person early voting alone, or 80% of the state’s total 2016 vote. …

The president may be dancing now at his super-spreader rallies, but if the union representing frontline workers has its way, he won’t be dancing on Election Night.

Millions of essential frontline workers have borne the brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic. They are all about ending his presidency as they mount the most massive voter engagement operation ever conducted by their union, Service Employees International Union ( SEIU). Their aim is to replace Trump and Pence with Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and along with them, they intend to install hundreds of down-ballot, pro-labor candidates.

“We have the money, we have the means, we have the resources in this country. But we are deeply lacking the leadership and somebody who cares,” said Michelle Boyle, an SEIU nurse from Pittsburgh, Pa., who was interviewed during the Democratic National Convention by soccer star Megan Rapinoe. …

During the vice-presidential debate, Sen. Kamala Harris recounted the Trump administration’s “historic failure” to address the COVID-19 pandemic. Vice President Mike Pence tried to defend the indefensible and, in desperation, claimed Joe Biden had “plagiarized” the Trump-Pence coronavirus plan, which he astonishingly touted as a great success.

FACT CHECK: The Biden campaign has released a highly detailed, science-based, public health plan for implementation on Day 1 of a new administration. The proposal is radically different from the Trump-Pence approach, or more accurately, the Trump-Pence calamity.

The Biden-Harris plan calls for a single national science-based approach that addresses both controlling the pandemic and dealing with the economic crisis. It begins with liberating the Centers for Disease Control, the Department of Health and Human Services, and other public health entities and their staffs from right-wing anti-science leadership. …

Blazing hot temperatures regularly top 100 degrees, while the haze from west coast wildfires lingers in the desert air with the coronavirus. But hundreds of union workers in Nevada are undeterred from going door-to-door to speak with voters. They are driven by the epic struggle for their lives, livelihoods, and families — winning this crucial battleground state for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

“We’ve never been in a fight like this one,” Giaconda Argüello-Kline, secretary-treasurer of Culinary Workers Union Local 226, told a virtual canvas launch Oct. 2. Covid19 has claimed the lives of 50 hospitality workers and family members and sickened 400 others. “We’re all going through fears because of the pandemic. But controlling the fear makes us stronger. …
